Noah and the Flood

No one knows of the Day of the Lord, but God only. However, Jesus gives us a reasonable hint how we shall be prepared for it. It would never be enough to say about His coming. Paul exhorts us to be sober and watchful because the night is nearly over (Romans 13:12). Jesus says that the Day of the Lord will be like the days of Noah. The flood swept through the earth and destroyed all the living beings, both humans and animals except Noah and his families and the selected animals.

The message of the flood is that there will be such a day, the Day of Judgment, when the Lord Jesus Christ comes again. It also tells us that the Son of God will be coming like the days of Noah. As in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Eating and drinking, and marrying are normal and ordinary activities of human lives. There is nothing wrong with that. The Judgment of God comes like a thief at night. While people are normally maintaining lives, Jesus will come suddenly and unexpectedly. The Day of Judgment will come at the end of physical life for each individual. No one knows when he dies. Therefore, Jesus says, “You also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:36-44 NKJV)
