God is Our Home (Psalm 90:1)

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” (Psalm 90:1 NKJV)

What does God mean to us? He is our home in all generations. We live in Him in any circumstance. No one can live without Him. This psalm is written by Moses. He was born in a most fatalistic time that he was supposed to be killed by his own parents because King of Egypt ordered all the male children of Israelites to put to death. His parents, however, hid him a while and eventually abandoned him in a basket on the river. He was delivered and raised by the princess of Egypt as prince. At the age of forty, he murdered an Egyptian and fled to the wilderness where he married and had two sons, feeding sheep forty years.

The life of Moses seemed ended in here as the shepherd of animals in the wilderness. When he thought that he was the least person to lead the people of God, he was called by the living God and commissioned to deliver from the outcries and bondages of Pharaoh. He resisted first at the daunting task but by grace he led the stubborn and obstinate people forty years in the wilderness. Probably, he was standing at the place where all could see the land of promise and delivering the exhortations and warnings to the new generation when he wrote this psalm.

All those years of his life is summed up in one sentence, “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.” There is no other person in history than him who had such an intimacy with God. There is no other person in history than him who was humiliated and downfallen before and after the calling. He experienced the pomp and splendor of Egypt, the smell and heat and cold in the land, and the stiff-necked people in another wilderness. After all, what Moses summed up regarding who God meant to himself and in all generations is that He is our home.

Home is resting place. Is it not? God is our refuge and shelter where we put our feet safely and securely. “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1 NKJV) Why then don’t people find rest and peace? God knows that we can’t find peace and rest until we come unto the Lord Jesus Christ. It is because humans suffer seriously since the fall of Adam which caused the death of body, soul, and spirit. “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” (Ephesians 2:1 NKJV) But in Christ Jesus, we were made alive, the spirit first instantly and then the body will be made alive in glory through the gateway of death.

Until man is born again in Christ, he has no access to the throne of grace, which means no rest at all. But those who are justified by the blood of Christ can stand in the presence of Holy God with confidence and boldness. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1-2 NKJV)

God is our home and welcomes anyone to His indwelling place through the faith of Jesus Christ the Lord. “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV)

“Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.
Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance.” (Isaiah 55:1-2 NKJV)
