Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin (Daniel 5)

In this dreadful event King Belshazzar was shocked and feared to death by the sudden and unwanted appearance of a human hand which was writing on the plaster of the wall, “mene, mene, tekel, parsin.” There is a God who runs the course of history according to his good purpose and will. He is the ultimate authority to determine the number of our days. He is the only One who measures each one’s life in justice and fairness and makes the final verdict whether in wanting or not. Everyone will stand before the judgment seat of the Lord Jesus Christ. The times and seasons we are not to know but shall be ready for the coming of the Lord for he will come suddenly.
“Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking.” (Daniel 5:5-6)
The time is short, the scriptures say (1 Corinthians 7:29). Man lives seventy years or eighty years if his strength endures, Moses said (Psalm 90:10). Some billionaires in Silicon Valley are investing a lot of money to find out a solution for human immortality. Medical science is so advanced and sophisticated that humans can live longer and healthier ever before. However, the death rate has not been changed at all but remained as flat 100%. Time is mysterious and unknown to mankind. Jesus says, "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” (Acts 1:7) At times, a day is like years and years like a day.
“A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” (Psalm 90:4)
Just as suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared so are all the human events happening abruptly and rudely no matter what. Once it happens nothing can stop the happenings. It’s like a birth which cannot be retreated at all. Our God is moving the course of history in purpose and meaning without an iota of error. Everything happens according to God’s time schedule. So when it happens that is what happens by God. Nothing to worry about what is going to happen but to take it by faith in Christ Jesus. That’s it. Be ready for the Lord’s coming.
“So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Matthew 24:44)
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15-16)
“And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Romans 13:11-14)
Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.” (Daniel 5:17)
What was written by the fingers of a human hand was not known by any wise men, magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and diviners in the whole kingdom. But it was known to a man whom God made him known. The world cannot know the mysteries of God. No education, scientific advancements, technological developments are avail in knowing the truth and reality of life. The things of God can be known only by the Spirit. Any human mind cannot understand the things of God. All believers in Christ has the mind of Christ for they are being taught by the Spirit.
“We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Corinthians 2:6-8)
“…these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10-11)
“The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:15-16)
This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
“Here is what these words mean:
Mene : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
Tekel : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Peres : Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.” (Daniel 5:25-28)
The number of our days are numbered by God who is sovereign. He alone determines the number of our days. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Our Lord Jesus says, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27) God even numbers the hairs of our head (Matthew 10:30). God weighs everyone according to the truth, the light, and our deeds. He reaches out the fallen race through nature, life, and the testimonies of numerous witnesses. Our God is compassionate, gracious, loving, patient, and merciful. He expects us to grow in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ being able to discern what is good from evil and teach about the righteousness of God. He pours out love for us to bear the fruits of the Spirit, love, joy, and peace. In the end, God will measure everyone according to his justice and righteousness in the judgement seat of the Lord Jesus Christ.
“Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.” (Romans 2:2)
God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” (Romans 2:6)
“All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.” (Romans 2:12)
“This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.” (Romans 2:16)
“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.” (1 John 3:2-3)
