Money is necessary. People work hard to earn it. We live our lives with it. We buy food, clothing, shelter, car, clothes, groceries, and pay taxes with it. Everyone wishes to have more, whether rich or poor. It comes from pressure and anxiety about the uncertain future. Yes, we don't know what will happen tomorrow. That's why we buy insurances.
But money cannot buy everything. It cannot buy happiness. Wealth does not determine the richness and fullness of life. It is not too difficult to prove. All you have to do is do a simple survey. Or just ask yourself. When you own what you want or when you achieve something, your rewards are satisfaction, relief, and joy. But the problem is that it's transient and ephemeral. We know that it is not what we want. Inevitably, we have to face the uncomfortable truth that it is not what we really want.
Money is morally natural. But the love of money is the problem. For the love of money is the root of all evil, and those who covet it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows (1 Timothy 6:10). To love money is to believe that money can solve everything. It is to rely on money more than the Creator God. But the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. We are supposed to worship Jehovah God only. Money, achievements, fame, or power are not things to worship. All these come from the Lord.
In John 4, Jesus gives a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well the gift of living water that will never thirst. The woman had five husbands, all divorced and living with another. So he said that she had no husband. It tells us that she was never truly satisfied even with five marriages. Jesus revealed himself that he was the Messiah of God whom the woman was looking for. To those who believe in Jesus Christ, God gives eternal life as a gift. At this, she went to the town and spoke of the Christ of God.
